Our Student Representative Council and Interfaith Ambassadors students’ groups have taken the initiative to collect Bread Tags to help save the environment. These pesky little pieces of plastic usually go into landfill and because of their small size are particularly dangerous to wildlife.
Our aim is to help save bread tags from going into landfill and helping people who cannot afford a wheelchair to get one.
We all use bakery items with tags on them. These tags are made of high impact polystyrene (type 6 plastic) which is denser than many other types of plastic, making them compact which are recycled, being made into seedling trays, door knobs, coasters and floor tiles. Bread Tags for Wheelchairs has been running in South Africa since 2006. Australia has been helping them with this cause.
The ҵ recycling company "Transmutation – Reuse, Reduce, Recycle", based in South Australia, have agreed to regularly buy batches of tags from Melbourne’s “Aussie Bread Tags office” for recycling purposes. Most tags are recycled in Australia while others will be sent to South Africa. The proceeds are used to provide wheelchairs for the needy with the funds remitted to South Africa. 500 kg of bread tags will help to purchase 2- 3 wheel chairs for someone in need.
All we need to do is to get a jar at home and throw your tags in. When you have accumulated enough bread tags, bring them to school and drop them off into your House-coloured Bread Jars based in your classrooms.
With every bread tag donated, you have also contributed 1 House Point.
Bread tags of bakery items, potatoes bags and onion bags are all welcome. We are not collecting bread ties because these are metal surrounded by plastic and so not suitable for recycling.
The project is open for the rest of the 2019.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to Ms Noori, College Captain Hafsa or any SRC or interfaith members.
